Statistics tell us today that one in four women and one in six guys suffer from depression.
Depression isolates us, disables us, and can contribute to deteriorating physical as well as emotional health.
It is not unusual to feel sad, blue, or depressed from time to time. Sadness is a normal reaction to loss, life’s struggles, or injured self-esteem. Sometimes, however, these feelings are so continually intense that they interfere with one’s ability to think, work, eat, sleep, enjoy being with others, or care for him or herself. When someone experiences a debilitating depression and feels unable to do anything about it, other people need to pay attention, even if the depressed person does not reach out for help.
International and country students are faced with a number of issues that could lead them into depression. This can be due to many factors including pressures to do well, isolation from family and friends, finanial problems, accommadation issues, eating and even sleeping patterns.
We run programs and events that help combat some of these areas, so as to see you maximise your university experience.
-Connection groups
-Socials events including our Mid Year Ball, Chill Lounge, BBQ's and even R&B nights
-Connection dinners
-How to not burn out info nights.
If you would like more information- check out our events page to see whats coming up.
I would also suggest that every international & country student joins a connection group near you, to build some strong friendships which can help to combat isolation.
A connection group allows you to have a close group of friendsto hang out with that support you, encourage you, uplift you and will help you grow as a person. Groups are usally made up of 4-8 people with most meetings being held mid-week. There are many groups to choose from so please check out our connetion page for more information.
If you feel at all depressed or are showing any signs of depression, please email or call us. We have trained counsellors, doctors, chaplains and pastors to walk beside you and help you through this.
